November 21,2021 in Important Days of the Year | 0 Comments

Eyes are one of the blessings of God. Without eyes, there’ll be darkness all around us, literally and figuratively. Therefore, we need to take care of our eyes as much as possible. People with bad eyesight and vision impairment go through a lot of hardships, and it is about time we do something about it. That is why world sight day has come to the surface to let the people know about the importance of their eyes, and how they can protect them.

What is world sight day?

World sight day is celebrated every year on October 14th. This day is also known as world vision day or world eye day. The prime goal of this day is to raise awareness about the health of the eyes and encourage people to draw more attention towards maintaining eye health. Apart from raising awareness, this day is also celebrated to recognize the work done by myriads of ophthalmologists all around the globe who work tirelessly to fix vision impairment.

All of us see our screens most hours of the day and I’m sure, most of us have missed plenty of eye appointments as well. That is why world sight day has emerged to force people to look into their eye health and prioritize it.

History of world sight day

World sight day goes back to 1998 when it was first held publically. Lions Club International Foundation (LCIF) first initiated world sight day and their campaign was known as the sightfirst campaign. LCIF held several programs worldwide where the organization talked about eye health, eye diseases, and all the surgeries that can restore your eyesight. In 1998, the world sight day occurred on 8th October but when it became a joint initiative between the international agency for the prevention of blindness (IAPB) and the world health organization (WHO), the date changed to October 14th.

WHO and IAPB always take an active part in all the events of world sight day. This day holds an immense amount of importance for all the people out there because everyone knows that eyes are the soul of the human body. Therefore, we need to do everything we can to protect them.

How to celebrate world sight day?

Sight can make a huge difference in a person’s life. It can convert a life of poverty into a life of opportunity. Everyone is encouraged to celebrate world sight day because if you can make someone treat their eyesight, you’re helping them to live a more fulfilling life. There are a number of ways through which you can celebrate world sight day. First of all, every year there is a theme around which all the campaigns and programs take place. This year, we have a love your eyes campaign. This is where social media platforms fall into the picture.

You can celebrate world sight day by raising awareness on social media platforms. Just a small Facebook post or a tweet will do the job. You can add various hashtags like #worldsightday or #loveyoureyes, depending upon your post. You can also hold a contest where you can ask the people to post their most favorite sight. It can be of a loved one, sunrise, beach, or any other thing. The best one goes with a small amount of cash prize.

Another way you can celebrate world sight day is by holding a donation day. You can donate the money that can help a person buy a frame or have an eye checkup. If you have lots of money, you can donate as much that can help a person in having eye surgery. It all depends upon your means and how much you’re willing to give. Remember, every penny matters. So, get your gear up and be ready for this year’s world sight day! We need all of you to become a part of this.
