Regression Testing

In a standard software development cycle, bugs are fixed first, and after each fix, regression testing should be done. Manual or automated regression testing is used to make sure that the modified part, after the changes, does not badly influence the other parts of the system. The defects can be aesthetic, functional, or non-functional. Often, additional defects are introduced in any other part of the system after a specific defect is solved. These unwanted defects can be known as side effects. The side effects in the application can prove themselves to be harmful to the company’s reputation. Due to this, customers can lose their trust in the application.

To avoid this, regression testing is integrated with the quality assurance process. The result is that only positive effects occur after any modification, and it is ensured that all the application requirements are met. There is a possibility that regression testing can fail due to issues in any other part of the application, even though the result of testing on the current or new functionality is positive.

Regression testing is done after changes like database upgrades or server patches to guarantee that the system’s integrity is not compromised and users are not negatively affected. Usually, regression test suites engulf the full functionality of the system; however, it is done in a limited capacity.
